No, it's not red - it's green Okay, just about everyone has a red laser pointer. Heck, we even sell a fine one here at ThinkGeek. But, we're pretty sure you want to be a superior geek - and doing it with a green laser is the way to go. This pointer is significantly brighter (about 50 times) than a red laser pointer and because of its unusual color it is much more noticeable. I mean come on, a 532 nm green laser wavelength is obviously superior to a laughable 650 nm red laser wavelength. And unlike a red laser, the green beam itself can be seen in mid-air in dark conditions, not just the laser beam dot. This allows the green laser pointer to be used for pointing to star constellations (skypointing) and also just generally look cool as hell. The green laser beam dot can be seen at much greater distances than with a red laser pointer. Since green direct injection laser diodes aren't readily available, this pointer is based on the use of Diode Pumped Solid State Frequency Doubled (DPSSFD) laser technology. A high power IR laser diode at 808 nm pumps a tiny block of Nd:YVO4 generating light at 1,064 nm which feeds a KTP intracavity frequency doubler crystal to produce the green beam at 532 nm. Features of this unit include: Very bright green laser at 532 nm wavelength Output power of <5mW (Class IIIa Laser Product) Range of approximately 9,000 ft (2600 m) in darkness 1.1 mm beam diameter at source Momentary push button switch Solid, heavy duty construction Constant wav

My kids each got one of these. They are very bright and you can even see the beam when it's dark outside or in a dimly lit room.
They do use up AAA batteries fairly quickly so I got some rechargeable batteries to use with them.
The pocket clip came off one of the two that we have but that didn't stop the laser from functioning.

First things first. Its a 5 mW laser. I cant see the beam in a lit house, or if there is sun, but at night the thing is pretty nuts. Very bright, and very good range. I guess the batterie life is not that good, but i am not sure about other lasers. The laser itself would be very difficult to pot mod without breaking something, and for a 5 mW laser, it is way over priced. If you are getting this for power point presentations, it is a very pretty laser. nice chrome color. it came in a cardboard material box with foam cut outs inside for it. (which looks nothing like what is advertised), the batteries it comes with suck, (bought new ones) but still work fine for the first 2 days. I like this laser, but it was way too expensive. do not get it if you want to modify it. there are cheaper ones. One problem it seems to have... if you run the laser too long, the diode turns red. and there is no beam. no dot. it needs to be given a break if used for over maybe like 2 minutes of run time.. All in all, i still like it a lot. its very fun to use at night. you can see the beam go on across fields or up in the sky. (all i really wanted was that anyhow)... i wont get bored of it, and it blows my mind, but i still want one with more power. Good Laser.

When the battery if fully charged, this is the most powerful laser pointer I've ever seen! You can see the actual laser beam as it cuts through a dimly lit room. It's cool for getting kittens to chase the light from blocks away. Seriously though, the biggest and often embarrasing problem with this pointer is the need to frequently change the batteries. It eats through them. If you go a couple days or so, especially if you have it in your pocket or another tight space where it may inadvertently be activated, it begins to work intermittently. It becomes unreliable, but changing the battery does not come to your mind as it still works occasionally. It's green color can also be effective where a presenter and a commentator can have seperate colored lasers. Overall, if you present frequently, and replace the batteries at least weekly, it will add a bold impact to your presentation.

All of you who said the laser didn't come in the aluminum case and said this laser sucks lmao it doesn't this laser has a very nice beam especially in the dark also u can feel a bit of heat on ur hand. Its very bright I loved it. So if your looking for a good laser to buy buy this one great laser overall.

Reading these reviews gave me a little pause, but I purchased this laser anyway. It was well packaged, although the case appears to be cardboard, not metal as one reviewer described.
The light is extremely bright, as described, and well-collimated. The button is crisp and reliable, and the case does not heat up. I use it continuously for about 5 minutes every night (our poodles love to chase the laser dot across the floor and it still continues to function perfectly after a month, on the same original set of batteries.
The company is great to deal with (they sent a replacement for one stolen from our mailbox at half price).
