 "Very Impressed" 2009-07-29
By Logan K. Sanderson (Colorado)
I bought this laser pointer because, after owning a couple decent red laser pointers, I realized that not many people have green lasers and I wanted to be different. Usually they're kind of expensive ($70+), and they're generally sold at dangerous power levels (>10mW).

Make sure you get this 5mW version; anything higher is extremely dangerous and illegal to promote as a "laser pointer".

<5mW is the same output power as many red lasers, however, since the human eye is more sensitive to the color green, this laser will appear several times brighter. The bright green dot is hard to stare at up close if shined on a light surface. Unlike red lasers, you can see the green dot in bright daylight.

For presentations under normal indoor light conditions, a red laser may be better suited as this one is a bit too bright.

Perhaps the coolest feature of the green laser, however, is that you can shine it at the sky and see the beam clearly. You can also see the beam in dark rooms. It's not like a lightsaber, but you can see it, especially if you look down the path of the beam.

I've never seen a high powered green laser pointed at the sky, but, unlike some other reviewers suggested, this pointer is certainly bright enough to be used for star gazing, even if it is not high power.

Overall, I'm very impressed with this laser pointer. It is <5mW, and at an affordable price. Shipping was about $10, but the price was still less than $30.

I'm considering getting a few more of these pointers to give away as gifts; because they are just so cool!

 "not for stargazing" 2009-07-25
By S. Huffman (kihei, hi)
The laser beam is bright enough for a split second to point out stars before it dims itself, so i find myself flickering the button to try to keep the brighter beam, which is annoying. Maybe I just got a faulty laser, especially after reading the other two stargazing reviews, one person got a good one and the other got a lemon. Unfortunately I got a lemon too.

 "Excellent for star gazing" 2008-10-24
By karen0017 (Greenfield, MN United States)
We purchased this to use for pointing out stars. It works beautifully, even on the clearest nights. It is easy enough to use that even my 7-year old child can accurately point at a star and ask what the star is, or trace out a constellation that she has learned. The beam is harder to see in very bright light, such as a clear sky and a full moon.

The batteries last a surprisingly long time; it's been over a year of regular use (including several sessions of more than an hour continuously), and we haven't changed the batteries once. I also recommend getting the book Find the Constellations by H. A. Rey -- one of the best introductory stargazing manuals around; you & your children will love it.

 "Don't use for stargazing" 2008-09-14

You will be disappointed if you bought this to use for stargazing. It works fine as a pointer but the beam is too weak to see against the night sky however dark it is.
